The Colt 1851 Navy was very popular during the Civil War although very few were issued by the government. They are .36 caliber six shot octagon barrel revolvers. A few guns can be found with martially markings. A small "U.S." just under "Colt's patent" on the left side of the frame  and inspectors initials on various parts of the gun. The grips were stamped with the initials of the inspector in an oval, very often on both sides of the grips. These guns are referred to Navy-Armies. Another rare Civil War 1851 navy is the Navy-Navy contracted buy the U.S. navy and often stamped with a "anchor" on the bottom of the backstrap.

The U.S. government contracted a large number of Colt 1860 Armies. They are in .44 caliber percussion six  shot, round barrel revolver. Inspectors marks on various parts and cartouche on grips - often worn off. No "U.S." on the frame.

A few of the Colt 1861 Navies were bought by the U.S. government for the Civil War. A .36 caliber six shot round barrel revolver. Martial revolvers have inspectors marks on various parts but no "U.S." on the frame.

The Colt 1862 Police was not a government issue but was purchased or presented to officers of the Union Army. They are .31 caliber five shot round barrel revolvers.
