Smith & Wesson Schofield Revolver Six shoot .45 Schofield Caliber Break-open tip down action. Action released with a catch lever on the top strap by the hammer. Cylinder and barrel hinge down on a pivot pin on the frame just in front of the cylinder.

Barrel Lug Marked on left side:
SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. PAT. JAN 17TH + 24TH 65, JULY 11TH 65, AUG 24TH 69, JULY 25TH 71.

Right side Barrel Lug marked:
SCHOFIELD'S PAT APR 22D 1878

Martially marked with "U.S." on the butt and inspector's cartouche on grips.

Historical Significance:
Used for a short time by the U.S. Cavalry
